Discuss BCBS Benefits for Treatment Options at Artemis

Residential, PHP, IOP and outpatient programs offer different levels of support. A clinical assessment helps identify appropriate care, and a benefits review addresses how the member’s plan may apply.
Residential Treatment
In residential treatment, teens live on-site and follow a structured schedule of mental health or substance use care. Families can ask about the program, available services and benefits for the recommended treatment.
- Licensed staff members available 24/7 for supervision and support
- Evidence-based treatment approaches
- Individualized treatment plans
- PhD and masters level teen therapists
- Trauma-informed, compassionate care
- Healthy activities (e.g., exercise, yoga)
- An upscale, supportive setting
- Fresh, healthy, delicious food
Families can ask about visitation, accommodations, activities and the treatment schedule. Length of care is individualized and reviewed as the teen’s needs change.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
PHP provides structured daytime treatment while teens live at home. It may be a starting level of care or a step down from residential treatment, depending on the teen’s assessment.
However, teens in PHP can sleep and live at home. PHP is commonly used as an alternative to or step down from residential teen addiction treatment.
Intensive Outpatient Program
Our intensive outpatient programs have a significantly lower time commitment than PHP.
Teens in IOP at Artemis attend therapy at our center a few hours per day on treatment days. This makes it possible to continue school or other responsibilities during substance abuse treatment.
Some teens start IOP after finishing a higher level of care. This eases the transition from more intensive support to typical daily life. Others (those who don’t require a higher level of care at their time of entrance) start treatment in IOP.
How to Verify BCBS Addiction Treatment Coverage at Artemis

Call our admissions line with your teen’s insurance card handy. The plan name, member ID and policyholder information help the team request relevant benefit information.
If you contact us outside of hours, we’ll return your call as soon as we’re back in the office. You’re also welcome to start the insurance verification process online.
Next Steps – What Happens After Insurance Verification
Alongside the benefits review, our team can discuss your teen’s needs and explain the admissions process. Moving forward depends on clinical fit, program availability and any necessary approvals.
Pre-Assessment Call
A pre-assessment call gives you a chance to explain what brings your teen to treatment and ask about our programs. It is a conversation about possible next steps, without a commitment to enroll.
Intake Evaluation and Admissions
After determining that our treatment center is the right fit, it is time for a comprehensive intake evaluation. This differs from a pre-assessment call. It’s more in-depth. At this time, we’ll ask questions about:
- Current symptoms (e.g., type and amount of substances currently used, overall mental health)
- Personal history (e.g., how long a teen has been using, whether they have been to treatment)
- Co-occurring disorders and mental health challenges (e.g., trauma, depression, bipolar disorder)
They will also need a medical exam from a healthcare provider, such as a primary care physician.
Starting Addiction Treatment
If admission is appropriate and the necessary arrangements are in place, our team can discuss a start date and help your family prepare. We will go through practical questions such as:
- Program start date (first day of treatment)
- What to bring to treatment and what to leave at home (if your child is entering residential treatment)
- An overview of what to expect toward the end of the program (e.g., how we collaborate with you to determine a discharge date, what to expect regarding discharge and aftercare planning)
We strongly encourage family involvement.[1] Family therapy, when possible, is an important part of our programs. Here, you’ll be highly involved in your child’s treatment, so you’ll know they’re in good hands.

Does BCBS insurance cover 100% of teen rehab costs?
Your family’s costs depend on the specific plan and services. Call admissions to review available benefits, any deductible, copays or coinsurance, and services the plan does not cover. Verification provides an estimate; the insurer determines coverage and payment.
How long does Blue Cross Blue Shield cover rehab for adolescents?
The duration a plan may approve depends on the teen’s needs, the services requested and the plan’s review requirements. Ask about:
- The specific BCBS plan your teen has
- Medical necessity
If a request is denied or more information is needed, our team can discuss the decision and any documentation or review options that may be available. A benefits check or approval does not guarantee final payment or admission.
Does BCBS cover group therapy for teens?
A BCBS plan may include group therapy benefits, either within a structured program or as a separate service. Our team can help you ask how those benefits apply to the recommended care.
Does Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona cover therapy?
A plan may include mental health and substance use therapy benefits. The member’s specific policy and any required authorization determine what applies to care at Artemis.
Does BCBS cover therapy for kids?
Some BCBS plans include therapy benefits for children and adolescents. Families should review age eligibility, covered services and approval requirements under their own plan.
What types of therapy are covered by BCBS?

Benefits may apply to different therapies when the plan’s requirements are met. among the best for the condition in question draws on research, clinical expertise and the person’s needs; it does not itself determine insurance payment. The care team may recommend approaches such as:
- Behavioral therapies (e.g., dialectical behavior therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy)
- Motivational therapies (e.g., motivational interviewing)
- Specialized trauma therapies
- Family therapy
Your teen’s treatment plan may combine approaches to address different needs. Ask how those services are included in the proposed program and benefits review.
Why Do BCBS Benefits Vary Between Families?
The Blue Cross Blue Shield system includes different companies and plans. For your family, the important information is the policy shown on your teen’s insurance card and the benefits that apply to the recommended care.
Does BCBS cover mental health medication?
Medication benefits depend on the specific plan and formulary, and some medicines require authorization. A qualified prescriber determines whether medication is appropriate; the plan can explain coverage and estimated costs.
